Motorcyclist killed in Henderson crash with RTC Bus
Police are investigating a traffic crash between a motorcycle and an RTC bus that occurred around 12:10 p.m. on a recent Monday. A man was riding a 2016 Yamaha motorcycle southbound on Haynes Drive, near South Boulder Highway, nearing East Basic Road at the time of the crash. He ran a stop sign and struck an RTC bus. The motorcyclist was taken to Henderson Hospital where he died from his injuries. One passenger in the RTC bus was treated for minor injuries at the scene of the crash, but thankfully no other serious injuries were reported. The previous weekend there were five fatal crashes around the Las Vegas Valley.
Spike in motorcycle fatalities in Clark County
The recent accident is just one among a larger trend as fatal motorcycle crash numbers have soared in recent years. We have previously discussed the rise in motorcycle accidents across Clark County and Nevada, with a 53% increase in motorcyclist deaths from 2015 to 2016. Safety officials point to an increase in the incidences of drug and alcohol use while riding as well as an increase in aggressive driving tactics. Some of the 2018 numbers are slightly better; officials noted that there were only 12 fatal crashes in Clark County in November 2018 as compared to 15 in November 2017.
Across the state of Nevada, one in six traffic fatalities in Nevada was identified as a motorcycle rider. According to safety experts, motorcycle riders are more than 27 times as likely to die in a traffic accident than occupants of a motor vehicle. There were an estimated 54 motorcycle deaths across the state in 2017. While motorcycle riding is inherently dangerous, that does not shield other motorists from liability if their negligent driving causes a motorcyclist to be injured or worse in an accident, and a qualified motorcycle accident attorney will help ensure that negligent drivers pay the compensation they owe.
