Nevada Highway Patrol to Educate Drivers on Causes of Truck Accidents

Truck accidents are some of the deadliest accidents that can happen on the state’s highways and streets. This is because a truck accident often involves a smaller and lighter motor vehicle, a pedestrian, or someone on a bicycle or motorcycle. These are no match for a truck that often weighs over a ton and is traveling at speeds of 55 miles per hour or more.

Just last month, two people died on Route 95 after their car collided with a semi-truck. The cause of that crash is being investigated, but there could be many reasons why the wreck occurred; the accident could have been the fault of the motor vehicle drivers or of the truck driver.

Although there have been many reports of the increase of semi-truck crashes due to fatigued driving, law enforcement officials in Nevada have also been taking new initiative to understand how it is for truck drivers to share the road with motor vehicle operators.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has been riding with truck drivers to see how motor vehicles around them are driving. When another motor vehicle operator is found breaking the law, a law enforcement official on the ground is alerted and stops those drivers.

Unsafe and Deadly Behavior on the Roads

During the operation, the highway patrol cited the following as causing unsafe and potentially deadly behavior on the roads:

  • Use of mobile devices
  • Following vehicles too closely
  • Unsafe lane-changes

It is important to recognize that motor vehicle operators play a part in preventing truck accidents too. While a truck crash can be due to the negligence of the truck driver, it can also be due to the negligence of the other individual(s) involved.

The Nevada Highway Patrol wants to educate all those using the roads on how to properly share the highway with the vehicles that drive it every day. They hope this will cut down the amount of accidents that occur – and save lives.
