Early-morning crash results in blaze

A crash occurring shortly after midnight caused a major collision on a Henderson highway. Nevada Highway Patrol were called to the scene of the crash shortly after midnight. Officers found that a Ford SUV heading south on US Route 95 had rolled over and burst into flames while passing near the Horizon exit. An 11-year-old girl had been thrown from the vehicle and was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. Four other occupants of the vehicle had also been injured and were taken to local hospitals. All accident victims were expected to survive their injuries. Law enforcement has not released the cause of the crash.

Rollover crashes one of the deadliest collision types

Rollover crashes are a lethal form of accident, typically responsible for over 1/3 of all motor vehicle fatalities each year. Rollovers are often associated with taller vehicles, such as commercial trucks, SUVs, and large vans that have a high center of gravity. That said, a rollover crash can happen to any type of vehicle under the right conditions.

Tripping, abrupt turns, and poor roadway conditions can cause rollovers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most common cause of rollover crashes is “tripping.” Tripping occurs when a vehicle encounters a different type of terrain or is otherwise knocked off-balance, resulting in some of the vehicle’s tires losing contact with the road. Tripping can occur when a vehicle hits a curb, guardrail, or object in the roadway. Vehicles are most susceptible to tripping when their wheel base is narrow and their center of gravity is high, such as in certain SUVs. Victims of rollover crashes may have claims against vehicle manufacturers or sellers where that vehicle was defectively designed to be a high risk for rolling over. Roads in poor condition, where loose gravel is left in the road or potholes remain unrepaired, can also cause rollover crashes, as can abrupt turns which knock a vehicle off-balance.
